Past Continuous Tense को Hindi में अपूर्ण भूत काल कहते हैं। पास्ट कंटीन्यूअस टेंस हिंदी के वाक्यों में बीते हुए समय में जारी कार्यों का बोध कराता है, जो भूतकाल में आंखों के सामने हो रहे थे। जैसे;

• वह कल मैच खेल रहा था।
• हमारा विद्यालय गांधी जयंती मना रहा था।
• सोहन इस कहानी का अनुवाद कर रहा था।
• रेखा आपसे क्या कह रही थी?
• क्या तुम हमें जानकारी दे रहे थे?
• लोग आपसे क्यों घृणा कर रहे थे?

Note: ऊपर दिए गए वाक्यों से यह बोध होता है कि इन वाक्यों में कार्य भूतकाल में जारी था अर्थात इन कार्यों में हमें यह ज्ञात नहीं है कि कार्य पूरा हुआ था अथवा नहीं। अतः सभी वाक्य Past Continuous Tense के हैं। ऐसे वाक्यों का अनुवाद हिंदी से अंग्रेजी में पास्ट कंटीन्यूअस टेंस के रूल्स के अनुसार करते हैं।

Past Continuous Tense in Hindi

Past Continuous Tense से हमें ज्ञात होता है कि कोई कार्य या घटना भूतकाल में जारी था अर्थात अपूर्ण था। Past Continuous Tense से हमें दो कार्यों का एक साथ होने के साथ-साथ दूसरे कार्य के होने का भी पता चलता है। ऐसे वाक्य Past Continuous Tense के होते हैं तथा इनमें कार्य समाप्त न होने का बोध होता है। जैसे;

1. श्याम कार चला रहा था।
(Shyam was driving a car.)

2. मैं घड़ी की मरम्मत कर रहा था।
(I was repairing the watch.)

3. राजू अपने गांव से आ रहा था।
(Raju was coming from his village.)

4. रोशनी एक सुंदर गाना गा रही थी।
(Roshani was singing a beautiful song.)

5. आपका भाई आप को क्यों पीट रहा था?
(Why was your brother beating you?)

6. जब मैं घर पहुंचा, मां खाना पका रही थी।
(When I reached home, mother was cooking food.)

7. जब मैं खेल रहा था, वह पढ़ रहा था।
(While I was playing, he was reading.)

8. वे बाग से फूल तोड़ रहे थे।
(They were plucking flowers from the garden.)

9. जानवर फसल बर्बाद कर रहे थे।
(The animals were destroying the crop.)

10. रोहन और मोहन आपस में झगड़ रहे थे।
(Rohan and Mohan were fighting among themselves.)

Note: पहले वाक्य में किसी कार्य की जारी होने का पता चल रहा है और यह कार्य भूतकाल में जारी था। दूसरे वाक्य मे एक कार्य हो रहा था तभी दूसरा कार्य संपन्न हुआ। तीसरे वाक्य में दो कार्य एक साथ जारी होने का पता चल रहा है। वाक्य 6 में एक कार समाप्त होने के साथ दूसरा कार्य हो रहा था। ऐसे ही वाक्य संख्या 7 में एक साथ दो कार्यों का होने का बोध हो रहा है। आते ही सभी वाक्य Past Continuous Tense के हैं। इनको हिंदी से अंग्रेजी में ट्रांसलेट करते समय नीचे दिए गए नियमों का पालन करते हैं।

Past Continuous Tense की पहचान

Past Continuous Tense के वाक्यों की क्रियाओं के अंत में रहा था, रही थी, रहे थे, हुआ था आदि शब्द आते हैं। ये past continuous tense के होते हैं। इस टेंस के वाक्य में किसी कार्य का भूतकाल में जारी होना पाया जाता है। ये शब्द मुख्य क्रियाओं के अंत में जुड़े होते हैं। ऐसे वाक्यों का अनुवाद पास्ट Past continuous tense में करते हैं। जैसे;

• राम पढ़ाई कर रहा था।
• वह कमरे में सो रहा था।
• बच्चा टीवी देख रहा था।
• अध्यापक हमें अंग्रेजी पढ़ा रहे थे।
• दादा जी रात में कहानी सुना रहे थे।
• यह बच्चा कल रो रहा था।
• कौवा पानी पी रहा था।
• लोमड़ी कौवे को देख रही थी।
• बच्चा जमीन पर लेटा हुआ था।

Main Verb (मुख्य क्रिया)

Past Continuous Tense की मुख्य क्रिया Verb की First Form + ing (Verb I +ing) होती है। जैसे;

• You were talking to me.
• When I came, she was sleeping.
• He was writing a letter to his father.
• I was coming from the school.
• The man was eating his food.

Helping verb (सहायक क्रिया)

Past Continuous Tense की सहायक क्रिया was तथा were होती है।

Rules of using helping verbs sentences:

• Singular Subjects या Nouns के साथ Was का प्रयोग करते हैं। तथा Plural Subjects या Plural Nouns के साथ were का प्रयोग करते हैं।
• I के साथ was का प्रयोग करते हैं।
• नीचे दी गई टेबल में Singular Subjects तथा Plural Subjects के साथ was तथा were का प्रयोग करके उदाहरण में समझाया गया है। जैसे;

He was running. (वह दौड़ रहा था।)	You were writing. (तुम लिख रहे थे।)
She was sleeping. (वह सो रही थी।)	We were helping. (वे सहायता कर रहे थे।)
It was raining. (बरसात हो रही थी।)	They were coming. (बे आ रहे थे।)
Raman was laughing. (रमन हंस रहा था।)	The boys were playing. (लड़के खेल रहे थे)
The girl was working. (लड़की काम कर रही थी।)	The people were crying. (लोग चिल्ला रहे थे।)
The driver was coming. (ड्राइवर आ रहा था।)	Those girls were bathing. (वे लड़कियां नहा रही थीं।)
I was dancing. (मैं नाच रहा था।)	The women were running. (महिलाएं दौड़ रही थीं।)
The cow was grazing. (गाय चर रही थी।)	He and I were weeping. (वह और मैं रो रहे थे।)

Affirmative Sentences of Past Continuous Tense Rules (साधारण वाक्य)

Past Continuous tense का affirmative sentences का sentence structure भी Present Continuous Tense की तरह होता है। Affirmative Sentences में helping verb “is, am, are” की जगह ‘was तथा ‘were‘ का प्रयोग करते हैं।

• सबसे पहले वाक्य का subject लिखते हैं।
• उसके बाद सहायक क्रिया was या were रखते हैं।
• सहायक क्रिया के बाद मुख्य क्रिया की first form में ing जोड़ कर सकते हैं।
• इसके बाद object रखते हैं।
• कर्म के बाद अन्य शब्दों को रखा जाता है।
• अन्य शब्दों के बाद full stop रखते हैं।

Structure: Subject + was + were + verb I + ing + object + other words

Examples –

1. वह पत्र लिख रहा था।
He was writing a letter.

2. मैं गाना गा रहा था।
I was singing a song.

3. श्याम कमरे में सो रहा था।
Shyam was sleeping in the room.

4. लड़के मैदान में खेल रहे थे।
The boys were playing in the field.

5. तुम कहानी सुन रहे थे।
You were listening to the story.

6. वह नाच रहा था।
He was dancing.

7. वे परीक्षा की तैयारी कर रहे थे।
They were preparing for the exam.

8. वह गणित के प्रश्न हल कर रहा था।
He was solving the questions of mathematics.

9. अध्यापक पाठ समझा रहे थे।
The teacher was explaining the lesson.

10. तुम रेल गाड़ी का इंतजार कर रहे थे।
You were waiting for the train.

11. बे बस से आगरा जा रहे थे।
They were going to Agra by bus.

12. वे मैदान में क्रिकेट खेल रहे थे।
They were playing cricket on the field.

13. तुम धूम्रपान कर रहे थे।
You were smoking.

14. वह खाना पका रही थी।
She was cooking the food.

15. बच्चे पढ़ाई कर रहे थे।
The children were studying.

16. वह मुझे सलाह दे रहा था।
He was advising me.

17. एक बूढ़ा व्यक्ति सड़क पार कर रहा था।
The old man was crossing the road.

18. राजा अपनी प्रजा को संबोधित कर रहा था।
The king was addressing his people.

19. मैं तुम्हारा इंतजार कर रहा था।
I was waiting for you.

20. ड्राइवर कार तेज चला रहा था।
The driver was driving the car fast.

21. अशोक कल इस रास्ते से जा रहा था।
Ashok was going this way yesterday.

22. आलोक हमें कुछ बता रहा था।
Alok was telling us something.

23. जब मैं वहां पहुंचा मोहन पानी पी रहा था।
Mohan was drinking water when I reached there.

24. जब वह खाना खा रहा था रोहित टीवी देख रहा था।
Rohit was watching TV while he was eating.

25. वे कल शाम को सिनेमा घर जा रहे थे।
They were going to the cinema house last evening.

Negative Sentences of Past Continuous Tense (नकारात्मक वाक्य)

Negative Sentence का Structure नीचे दिया गया है, नकारात्मक बनाने के लिए was या were के बाद not का प्रयोग करते हैं। नीचे steps को फॉलो करते हैं;

• सबसे पहले वाक्य का कर्ता रखते हैं।
• कर्ता के बाद सहायक क्रिया was या were रखते हैं।
• उसके बाद not लगाते हैं।
• अब मुख्य क्रिया की फर्स्ट फॉर्म में I form में ing जोड़कर रखते हैं।
• मुख्य क्रिया के बाद ऑब्जेक्ट रखते हैं।
• ऑब्जेक्ट आज अन्य शब्दों को रखते हैं।
• अंत में full stop लगाते हैं।

Note: आप सब्जेक्ट के बाद wasn’t या weren’t का प्रयोग भी कर सकते का प्रयोग भी कर सकते हैं।

1. तुम्हारा मित्र कविता नहीं पढ़ रहा था।
Your friend was not reading the poem.

2. ये गायें में मेरे खेतों में नहीं चर रही थीं।
These cows were not grazing in my fields.

3. वह अपने पिता को पत्र नहीं लिख रहा था।
He was not writing a letter to his father.

4. रेखा अपने बेटे को नहीं पढ़ा रही थी।
Rekha was not teaching her son.

5. यात्री बस का इंतजार नहीं कर रहे थे।
The passengers were not waiting for the bus.

6. वे लड़के कक्षा में शोर नहीं कर रहे थे।
Those boys were not making a noise in the class.

7. विद्यार्थी विद्यालय नहीं जा रहे थे।
The students were not going to school.

8. मैं तुमसे बात नहीं कर रहा था।
I was not talking to you.

9. लड़का नहीं रो रहा था।
The boy was not weeping.

10. मैं अनुवाद नहीं कर रहा था।
I was not translating.

11. मदन चोरी नहीं कर रहा था।
Madan was not stealing.

12. कमल का भाई ईमानदारी से काम नहीं कर रहा था।
Kamal’s brother was not working with honesty.

13. हम आपको नहीं बुला रहे थे।
We were not calling you.

14. पवन सिंह कार नहीं चला रहा था।
Pawan Singh was not driving the car.

15. वे अंग्रेजी नहीं बोल रहे थे।
They were not speaking English.

16. पूजा अपना घर नहीं सजा रही थी।
Pooja was not decorating her house.

17. देव अपने दादाजी के साथ ताजमहल देखने नहीं जा रहा था।
Dev was not going to see the Taj Mahal with his grandfather.

18. ये लड़के मैदान में हॉकी नहीं खेल रहे थे।
These boys were not playing hockey in the field.

19. मैं तुम्हें परेशान नहीं कर रहा था।
I was not disturbing you.

20. राजा अपनी प्रजा की सेवा नहीं कर रहा था।
The king was not serving his people.

21. यह बच्चा कमरे में नहीं सो रहा था।
This child was not sleeping in the room.

22. भालू लोगों पर हमला नहीं कर रहा था।
The bear was not attacking people.

23. इन छात्रों के माता-पिता प्रधानाचार्य से मिलने नहीं आ रहे थे।
The parents of these students were not coming to meet the Principal.

24. ये बंदर पेड़ों से फल नहीं तोड़ रहे थे।
These monkeys were not plucking fruits from the trees.

25. जब आप वहां पहुंचे, सोहन अपने दादाजी के साथ नहीं चल रहा था।

Interrogative Sentences of Past Continuous Tense (प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य)

Yes-No type Questions: यदि प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य से ‘क्या’ से शुरू हो तो ‘क्या’ शब्द की अंग्रेजी ना लगा कर helping verb ‘was’ या ‘were’ को सबसे पहले रखते हैं।

1. सबसे पहले आपको ‘क्या’ की अंग्रेजी की जगह  सब्जेक्ट के अनुसार was या were को रखना है।

2. उसके बाद आपको सब्जेक्ट रखना है।

3. सब्जेक्ट रखने के बाद आपको main verb मुख्य क्रिया की first form में ing जोड़ कर रखना है।

4. उसके बाद कर्म रखते हैं तथा कर्म के बाद अन्य शब्दों को रखा जाता है।

5. वाक्य के अंत में प्रश्नवाचक चिन्ह लगाना ना भूलें।

Wh-words Interrogative Sentences

यदि वाक्य में ‘प्रश्नवाचक शब्द’ बीच में आए तो नीचे दिए गए स्ट्रक्चर के अनुसार वाक्य का अनुवाद करते हैं।

Interrogative Negative Sentences of Past Continuous Tense

इंटेरोगेटिव नेगेटिव सेंटेंसेस में Subject के बाद Not का प्रयोग करते हैं। बाकी के नियम पहले की तरह मान्य होते हैं।

Use of Past Continuous Tense in Hindi

जब वर्तमान में कोई कार जारी रहता है तो उसे प्रेजेंट कंटीन्यूअस टेंस के द्वारा व्यक्त करते हैं जबकि भूतकाल के लिए जारी कार्य को पास्ट कंटीन्यूअस टेंस द्वारा व्यक्त किया जाता है। Past Continuous Tense का प्रयोग कहां, कब और क्यों करते हैं यह समझने के लिए नीचे दिए गए नियमों का ध्यान से अध्ययन करें।

Actions happening in the Past

भूतकाल में जारी थे या हो रहे थे कार्यों को व्यक्त करने के लिए इस टेंस का प्रयोग करते हैं।

जैसे –

1. He was writing a letter at night.
वह रात में पत्र लिख रहा था।

2. She was playing yesterday.
वह कल खेल रही थी।

3. When I came to see her, she was singing in the room.
जब मैं उसे देखने आया, वह गाना गा रही थी।

4. आपका भाई पत्र लिख रहा था।
Your brother was writing a letter.

5. श्याम सड़क पर घूम रहा था।
Shyam was walking on the road.

6. राजू अपने पिता के साथ बाजार जा रहा था।
Raju was going to the market with his father.

7. लोग तुम्हारा इंतजार कर रहे थे।
People were waiting for you.

8. हम विज्ञान के प्रश्नों को हल कर रहे थे।
We were solving science questions.

9. लोग भालू को पकड़ रहे थे।
People were catching the bear.

10. वह अपने कपड़ों को धो रहा था।

Two actions happening in the same time

जब दो कार्य एक ही समय में हो रहे हों या जारी हों तो दोनों कार्यों के लिए Past Continuous Tense का प्रयोग करते हैं। Past Continuous Tense के वाक्यों में when तथा while का प्रयोग एक साथ घट रही कार्य या घटनाओं को व्यक्त करने के लिए किया जाता है।

Examples:

1. जब मैं स्टेशन पहुंचा, गाड़ी जा रही थी।
When I reached the station, the train was leaving.

2. जब वह खेल रहा था मैं विज्ञान के प्रश्न हल कर रहा था।
I was solving science questions while he was playing.

3. जब राजा युद्ध कर रहा था, उसके सैनिक उसकी रक्षा कर रहे थे।
When the king was fighting, his soldiers were protecting him.

4. जब हम सिनेमा पहुंचे, वह फिल्म देख रही थी।
When we reached the cinema, she was watching a movie.

5. जब मैं ऑफिस पहुंचा, सब बॉस का इंतजार कर रहे थे।
When I reached the office, everyone was waiting for the boss.

6. While I was studying, she was sleeping.
जब मैं पढ़ रहा था, वह सो रही थी।

7. He was cooking the food while I was sleeping.
वह खाना पका रहा था जब मैं सो रहा था।

8. The students were sleeping while you were teaching them.
जब आप उन्हें पढ़ा रहे थे तब विद्यार्थी सो रहे थे।

Past Continuous Tense in Indirect Speech

Indirect Speech में  Present Continuous Tense को ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌Past Continuous Tense बदलते हैं।

Examples –

1. Ram said, “He is opening his shop.”
Ram said that he was opening his shop.

राम ने कहा, “वह अपनी दुकान खोल रहा है।”
राम ने कहा कि वह अपनी दुकान खोल रहा है।

2. I said to him, You are not obeying me.”
I told him that he was not obeying me.

To express increase or decrease

यदि किसी कार्य में दिन-व-दिन वृद्धि हो रही हो तो verb “get, become, grow” का प्रयोग करते हैं।

जैसे –

1. आपका दोस्त अमीर और अमीर होता जा रहा था।
Your friend was becoming richer and richer.

2. मैं और बदसूरत होता जा रहा था।
I was becoming more and more ugly.

3. यह हल्का और हल्का होता जा रहा था।
