Types of Non-Finite Verbs

Non-Finite को निम्नलिखित तीन प्रकार होते हैं;

  1. Infinitive
  2. Gerund
  3. Participle

Infinitive

पहचान : हिन्दी के वाक्य में यदि क्रिया में ना, नी, ने लगा हो तब वह क्रिया नहीं होती बल्कि उसे Infinitive कहते हैं।

Rule: साधारण Verb की I form से पहले to लगाने से Infinitive बन जाती है, किन्तु Infinitive के निम्नवर्णित रूप भी होते हैं;

Simple Infinitive Perfect Infinitive
Active: to + verb I  to have + verb III
Passive: to + be III  to have + been + III

Perfect Infinitive में मुख्य क्रिया (main verb) से पहले कार्य के पूर्ण हो जाने का बोध होता है।

Examples:

1. उसे बैठने के लिए एक कुर्सी दो।
Give him a chair to sit on. (Simple Infinitive in Active)

2. वह व्यक्ति विश्वास करने के योग्य नहीं है ।
That man is not to be trusted. (Simple Infinitive in Passive)

3. वह सूची में प्रथम आने से बहुत प्रसन्न था ।
He was very glad to have topped the list. (Perfect Infinitive in Active)

Always Remember: (1) यदि वाक्य में कोई उद्देश्य (purpose) व्यक्त किया जाये जिसमें हिन्दी में अधिकतर ‘ के लिए ‘ लगा होता है तब Infinitive का प्रयोग करना चाहिए Gerund का नहीं ; जैसे

वह बाग में घूमने के लिए जाता है । (उद्देश्य)
He goes for walking in the garden. (Incorrect)
He goes to walk in the garden. (Correct)

(2) किन्तु यदि साधन का पता लगे और ‘ के लिए ‘ भी दिया हो तब for के साथ Gerund का प्रयोग करना चाहिए और for + Gerund से पूर्व Noun (साधन)

जैसे; वह घूमने के लिए छड़ी का प्रयोग करता है।

  • He uses a stick to walk. (×)
  • He uses a stick for walking. (✓)

Gerund

पहचान: Gerund में भी Infinitive की तरह ही हिन्दी के वाक्यों में क्रिया में ना, नी, ने लगा होता है।

Rule: ऐसे शब्दों की हिंदी से अंग्रेजी बनाने के लिए क्रिया की । form में ing लगाते हैं। अतः अनेक स्थानों पर Infinitive तथा Gerund दोनों में से किसी का भी प्रयोग हो सकता है। जैसे;

1. घूमना स्वास्थ्य के लिए अच्छा है ।
Walking is good for health . (Gerund)
To Walk is good for health. (Infinitive)

2. वह तेज दौड़ना पसन्द करता है ।
He likes running fast. (Gerund)
He likes to run fast. (Infinitive)

Note: 1. कभी – कभी एक ही Verb की Infinitive और Gerund दोनों बन तो जाती है, किन्तु उन वाक्यों के अर्थ में भिन्नता आ जाती है। जैसे;

  • I stopped to sing a song. (मैं गाना गाने के लिए रुका।)
    I stopped singing a song. (मैंने गाना गाना बंद कर दिया।)
  • He forgot to buy the book . (मैं पुस्तक खरीदना भूल गया।) He forgot buying this book. (मैं भूल गया कि मैंने यह किताब खरीदी थी)

2. जब कभी Preposition का प्रयोग आवश्यक हो तब उसके बाद Gerund का ही प्रयोग करना चाहिए Infinitive का नहीं। जैसे;

उसे धन चोरी करने के लिए दण्डित किया गया।
He was punished for stealing money.

पुस्तक पढ़ने के बाद वह बाहर चला गया।
After reading the book he went out.

Note: निम्नलिखित Verbs या Phrases के बाद Gerund आता है।

Verbs (क्रियाएं): suggest , prevent , postpone , understand finish , escape , explain , delay , celebrate Verbs : enjoy , excuse , forgive , pardon , deny , contess , consider , avoid , dislike , grant , miss , far from , no good , no use .

Phrases (वाक्यांश): go on , keep on , put off , sick of , used to , with a view to , look forward to , fond of , capable

Verbal Noun

Verbal Noun में भी Gerund की भाँति क्रिया में ना, नी, ने लगा होता है और इसे भी Verb की I form में ing लगाकर बनाते हैं। किन्तु जब Gerund के बाद of का प्रयोग हो रहा हो तब Gerund से पूर्व the करना आवश्यक हो जाता है।

जैसे: Verbal Noun = The + Gerund + of.

1. चित्र का बनाना एक अच्छी कला है ।
The drawing of picture is a good art.

2. पक्षियों को मारना पाप है।
The killing of birds is sin.

Participle

पहचान: हिन्दी के वाक्यों में जिस क्रिया में कर रहे, वाला, वाली, वाले, हुआ, हुए, हुई आदि शब्द लगे हों, वे क्रियाएँ Participle कहलाती हैं।

Participle निम्नलिखित तीन प्रकार के होते हैं;

  • Present Participle
  • Past Participle
  • Perfect Participle

Present Participle

जब दो कार्य लगभग साथ – साथ हो रहे हों और दोनों का Subject एक ही या एक कार्य के तुरन्त बाद दूसरा कार्य किया जाए, तब Present Participle का प्रयोग करते हैं।

Examples:

1. मैंने एक अंधे आदमी को सड़क पर जाते हुए देखा।  I saw a blind man going on the road

2. भौंकने वाले कुत्ते कम काटते हैं ।
Barking dogs seldom bite

3. चाक उठाकर अध्यापक ने लिखना आरम्भ कर दिया ।
Picking up the piece of chalk , the teacher started writing .

4. शेर को देखकर वह भाग गया ।
Seeing the lion, he ran away While reading. I slept.

Note: यदि पहले कार्य के दौरान ही दूसरा कार्य हो रहा हो तब Present Participle से पूर्व While का प्रयोग

1. पढ़ते – पढ़ते मैं सो गया।
While reading. I slept.

2. घूमते – घूमते वह गिर पड़ा।
While walking, he fell down .

Past Participle

Past Participle अधिकतर भूतकाल की बीती हुई बात को बताता है तथा किसी व्यक्ति / वस्तु की विशेषता बताता है । इसे Verb की III form से बनाया जाता है।

Examples:

1. जला हुआ बच्चा आग से डरता है।
A burnt child dreads the fire.

2. मुरझाये हुए फूल सुन्दर नहीं होते हैं।
Faded flowers are not beautiful.

Perfect Participle

यह अधिकतर उस दशा में प्रयोग किया जाता है जब एक कार्य पूर्ण रूप से समाप्त होने के बाद दूसरा आरम्भ हो ।

Rule: इसे Having के साथ Verb की III form से बनाते हैं ।

1. नहाकर माँ ने खाना बनाना शुरू किया
Having taken bath, my mother started cooking .

2. इनाम बाँटकर मुख्य अतिथि चले गये।
Having distributed the prizes, the chief guest went home .

Note: यदि दो कार्यों के बीच कुछ समय ( interval of time ) हो या पहला कार्य सम्पन्न होने में एक अवधि ले तब भी Perfect Participle बनाना चाहिए। जैसे;

1. नगर में मकान बनाकर उसने गाँव छोड़ दिया।
Having built a house in the city, he left his village.

2. इस नगर में पाँच वर्ष रहकर मैं प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को जान गया।
Having lived in this town for five years, I knew everyone .

Present Participle तथा Perfect Participle की तुलना करें –

1. Opening the book , he began to read . यहाँ पहला कार्य (पुस्तक खोलना) दूसरे कार्य का एक हिस्सा है, इसलिए पहला कार्य Present Participle में बनेगा ।

2. Having eaten his food, he went out to play .
यहाँ पहला कार्य दूसरे कार्य का हिस्सा नहीं है , दोनों ही कार्य समान महत्त्व के हैं । इसलिए पहला कार्य Perfect Participle में बनेगा ।
